good info...thanks...i'm really between the Gravely ZT HD 48 and the Exmark Radius X 48 at the moment...i think a 48" deck is plenty for my yard and it will be small and nimble enough to get into some of the tight spaces in my yard with the bagger attached

Like someone else stated, get the most that you can afford in the size you want. For a couple of acres, there isn't much difference between 42" and 48" models. EXMARK seems to be very well built, but I haven't tried one. JD models have yellow mower decks for their residential models and green mower decks for their commercial models. I have a very hilly backyard and can confirm that the mower will slide down on you if you are cutting laterally, especially if the grass is wet or damp. In my case, I have some 40 degree slopes that I need to cut, so I added some extra weights to the front, in addition to the weights added for a bagger system, in order to go straight up or down the hills.

Yeah. I talked with a couple places that sold Ferris mowers, and both would sell me the stander I was looking at with a Kawasaki engine for $300 less than the Vanguard. They both strongly suggested going with the Vanguard engine with the new oil guard system, and shit on Kawasaki engines in general. I was surprised by this, after buying two used Ferris mowers because they had Kawasaki engines. IDK, I didn't do much looking into it, but figure if two different dealers are saying the same thing, there would be a reason.
thanks...are you sure you don't have that backwards?...or maybe it's cause it's a US engine?...every model i have looked at has the kawasaki as an upgrade from a kohler or a briggs engine

From that list, buy the ExMark. The Scag is a mostly bolted together chassis, and unless you're very attentive, it's rattle apart. I used to be an ExMark and Gravely dealer, and the Gravely was not the machine that the ExMark was.

scaled back my want list even more...now looking at a 42" fab deck toro or exmark with non-powered bagger...heard good things about the engines on these...probably just go with a tow behind dethatcher...just have to check widths with the bagger installed and then try to see if there are any differences between the 2 models since they are essentially the same brand...looks like the toro has a food operated deck height adjustment while the exmark has a hand adjusted one...toro

That ALTOZ is laughable, saw that on Craig's a couple weeks ago. Between the Toro and the Ezmark, I look at Toro I see a homeowner machine, Exmark is commercial duty. My 2 cents, I've never owned either. I've owned Scags and Lescos, both have been great.

I have a craftsman ztl1000 (mtd) had it about 7 years mows an acre so fa so goodOnly change was putting tubes in the tires, mounted an angle iron to be tow bar

after reading the nightmares people are having with the automatic parking brake modules in the toro mowers...basically locking the machine up or killing the battery...i will be staying away from anything from toro that has an automatic parking brake...the toro has the better transmissions (hg2200) than the exmark (hg2100) so maybe i will end up bumping up the model list a little so i can get a model with actual serviceable transmissions...guess i need to get back to the drawing board

-scag liberty z 36 $4000 (hg2800) (non powered bagger)now leaning towards the gravely at the moment or just going with my original choice of the toro and just hope the parking brake module doesn't malfunction

narrowed it down to 3 42" deck choices i think...going to try them out if they have them on the floor...leaning towards the toro at the moment but i wish i could upgrade the front caster wheels and brackets to accommodate wider tires...still a little worried about having a wet lawn and scalping/rutting...if all else fails i'll be going with a husqvarna tractor with a bagger...i was just hoping to make cutting a little faster with a zero turn...-transmissions (gravely>toro/husqvarna)

FWIW (on one of your smaller points) I bought this Agri-Fab 44 in tow behind sweeper last fall and it's pretty awesome. I spent an entire day with leaf blower/rake/tarp and when I finished work I had managed to complete a very small part of my 2 acres. The next day I went to Tractor Supply and bought the sweeper, assembled it, cleared the rest of the property, then went out for an early lunch with some buds. This spring I've used it for winter clean up, it will pickup any stick that isn't to large for the intake. $300 very well spent.
-non powered bagger (depends if there are any clogging issues, but probably going to get a sweeper for the leaves and sticks)

The sweepers are awesome. I had one as I didn't want to invest the money on a bagger set up for an old hand me down mower I had. When I recently bought my zero turn I got the bags and thought I'd never use the sweeper again. I was wrong. I wish I would have passed on spending the extra money for the bagger set up. Set it low enough and it'll even dethatch the lawn

nice!...i was thinking of getting a dethatcher at some point also but if the sweeper will do it then i won't bother...but i really need both a bagger and a sweeper...if i didn't have as many obstacles and tight spots in my yard i would just skip the bagger and get a sweeper and a mulching kit...i just don't always have time to cut the lawn and it gets long sometimes

If the sweeper doesn't dethatch quite as much as you need they have a few different bolt on options that attach to the sweeper. The plus with that is its only one pass around the yard to dethatch and clean up. I've seen some that will mount to the front of the zero turn. But for me I get more than enough with the sweeper set low.I did get the mulch selector on my deck and that has been a nice feature. Per John Deere its suppose to be removed when you bag but the chute still fits on and only time it clogs is when the bags fill up.

after thinking about it some more and walking around my soggy rear yard i think i'm going to research garden tractors as well...the reasons for this are...-my self propelled push mower ruts areas when the yard is wet as it is...the added weight of a zero turn and small front tires even though they are more rear weighted, plus a bagger/weight kit, plus trying to do a zero turn back there i think i will be making a mess of the lawn no matter how well i learn how to operate it...i don't always have time to wait to cut at the opportune time so maybe the larger tires and weight being more evenly dispersed between them would be better
-i plan to move some large rocks out of my yard with a small garden dump trailer i acquired (instead of using a wheel barrow)...so i figure the transmission of a garden tractor would be better for something like this vs a zero turn
-it will be more user friendly in case my dad comes by and wants to use it or my wife decides to help me cut while i trim
<1 acre...~5% slope...have a wet soggy yard sometimes so i think the larger tires of a tractor may be better than a zero turn...any advice would be appreciated...thanks in advance

very close to pulling the trigger on a Husqvarna TS 348XD...got a price of $3500 for the tractor and $400 for the bagger from the local hardware store...MSRP price on the husqvarna website is $3400 so i assume the extra $100 is for assembly and setup for the dealer...i think i'm going to save $100 and just buy the bagger from lowes and install it myself and buy the mower from them

well i now have one of these to cut the lawn with as well as move things around...i just have to order the bagger from lowes...looks like i'm going to have to modify the bagger right off the bat judging by the reviews of itTS348XD
